Wales has amazing castles. Here are some found in the north west. Most of these represent Edward 1st’s attempt to subdue the unruly citizens of Wales in the C13th. The one exception is Dolwyddelan which started life as a Welsh castle guarding a route in central north Wales but also ended up in the hands of the cunning Edward.
One can only begin to imagine the lives lived within the walls of such structures. Beautiful to our hearts and imaginations today, the grey stone against the green grass … but not at all like 13th century reality I’m sure.
… or living in the shadow. The Welsh must have felt oppressed by these massive (whitewashed) castle walls of the English. Then think of hanging your clothes in the garderobe (toilet) because the smell kept the moths away!
