Running With Youth’s Naivety – a Poem on Sunday

Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
Acts 2: 17

Oh to run with the naivety of youth,

To jump, dive

and explore

with abandon.

Oh to embrace and experience

Life!

To touch and feel its pleasures and joys.

Oh to try, fail and try again.

Oh to be blind to the cliffs and canyons

of indelible experiences.

Oh to run …

The old head says,

“Wait,

Be careful,

Listen,

Stop!”

The old head remembers the pain

of jumping, running and diving.

The sorrow of embracing.

The old head wishes

that once again,

he could run with the naivety

of youth.

Hip Aches – a lamentation

Hip aches.
Shoulder twitches,
Fingers creak,
Eyes falter,
Back tender,
Arches sore.
Getting older is a pain
or numerous pains.

Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come …

Family Humming – a Poem

Oven cooking,
Kitchen busy,
Mixer whirring,
Aromas wafting.
Dining table buzzing,
Dice and tokens clattering
… with an exciting game.
Music filling in the background gaps.
Television off.
Cat owning the heating vent.
Coffee percolating,
Tea brewing.
Family humming.
I love Saturday night!

Narcissism

Narcissus was so obsessed with his reflection in a pool of water that he was unable to leave -and died.

If you are one in a million, that means there are over 6000 people just like you!

The mirror,
The reflective shop front windows:
… adjust the hair, pout the lips.
The models, the clothes:
… it’s all about me.
The reality TV show,
Those 15 minutes of fame:
“My! I am attractive.”
“Oh, I deserve it.”
“Gorgeous/Spunky!” (you choose)
“I AM the most important person in the world.”
“I AM special”.
“I AM Unique.”
Giving,
Sharing,
Co-operating,
Putting the other first,
Team,
Body life,
Fellowship.
 Life sucking. Life giving.
Your choice.

I have Two Faces … or more

I have two faces,
No.
Maybe more.
Faces for all occasions.
The private and public.
For friends and not so friends
For family and others not so close.
There is a game I play
We all play,
Where the depths
Thoughts and pains,
The awkward feelings and fears
Angers and spites
Are only on display,
at best, for some.
… maybe none.
A bright “Hello”
A hearty joke
Bonhommie is the display window.
The Soul, the heart are cloaked in rooms behind.
But You see,
You know,
Even the things I hide with excuses,
and bluster.
You cut through the darkness and
All is revealled, displayed and laid out
To Your eyes and Your heart.
I mumble “Thankyou”.
Even if I didn’t want You to look.
I am honest with You.
Not because I want to be.
But in You I can’t hide
My many masks.

God’s Lists – A Poem

God’s Lists      (e.g Exodus 20:15-17 & Galatians 5: 19-21)

God’s lists touch a nerve.
A raw nerve.
I want to run,
Avert my head,
Cover my heart.
The stare of His lists is uncomfortable,
Unsettling.
I squirm,
Deny,
Excuse.
 …
His firm but mellow hand
Holds,
Will not let me run or hide.
His lists
Like a searchlight
Reveals dark places,
Hidden corners,
Uncovers brokenness.
 …
Then

Detail from the font in Winchester Cathedral

In an almighty scream of love
He clothes me in His son.
The list evaporates.
The light finds nothing
… but perfection!
He sees me whole,
Complete, Holy.
 …
All I can do is weep;
Weep tears of elated
Hallelujahs!

“Forgive Us Our Trespasses No.2” a poem

My one little sin
Piled upon the others …
Your little sin
Piled upon yours …
Their little sin
Upon theirs:
Each, seemingly,
So insignificant,
So minuscule,
But daily,
Weekly,
Yearly,
They grow and grow.
The heap rises to the depths.
It blots out the light of God.
Darkness descends,
Until the cross …
Until the Grace …
Until the Sacrifice
… breaks through.

“Forgive Us Our Trespasses No 1” a poem

Forgive us our trespasses.
How vast the canyon
Riven by me
Between us.
How prohibitive the distance
That I have stretched
Between us.
How impossible the mountain
My brokenness has heaped
Between us.
But the cross
Bridges,
Restores
And surmounts
All my sin has accrued.
My Amen  …
… beyond words.

Anima Christi – C14th Prayer

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesus, hear me;
Within Thy wounds hide me;
Let me never be separated from Thee;
From the malicious enemy defend me;
In the hour of my death call me,
And bid me come unto Thee,
That with thy Saints I may praise Thee
Forever and ever. Amen.

A Poem on Sunday Gen 3:4-5

The world tugs and wrenches at my heart.
Slyly it lures and entices.
Whispers and cajoles.
“You will know the truth.”
“You will not die.”
“You will be like God!”
“Bite, chew, enjoy!”
“Savour the taste.”

The world still tugs, wrenches and lures.
Double minded heart.
Dissembling mind.

The drag and pull relentless,
But life is at hand.
The Calvary comes,
Spirit descends.
Still at war …
… but my side is winning.
