The Innkeeper – Correcting the record

I’ve been given a bum wrap.
On the night in question
I’d gone to bed early.
The place was full
‘coz of this census thing.
I’ d been busy all day
fetchin’ this and
and sortin’ that.
And I turned in.
I was bushed.
Now I find I am blamed
for leaving the Messiah
out in the cold.
How was I to know!
It’s not my fault!
The girl at the desk
(a bird brain!)
Never told me.
She told the pregnant lady
and her husband
to use the back shed.
I woulda had more
respect than that.

Years later
people still blame me.
Matthew doesn’t mention me.
Neither does Luke.
But people
once again
jump to
the wrong conclusions,
like they do so often.

Yep.
It coulda been done better.
But still,
how many people can say
the Saviour was born
behind their pub!

Gladness – a poem reflecting on Psalm 16:9,10

Gladness,
a safe coat
wraps around me
in a warm glow
that streams from within
and radiates
out into the world.
My tongue thrills,
rejoices,
sings “hallelujahs”
of childlike
spontaneous praise,
uttering, babbling, outpouring
words tumbling, end over end,
water rushing over rocks.

Why?
Why? You ask!

Because the
dirt
dark
cold ground
cannot restrain,clamp
or hold
the child of God
in its filthy grip.

The Christ
tore its hold,
ripped open its frozen clutch
from the damp darkness.

Rejoice , Sing,
Shout
Angel praises
of everlasting
thanks!

What Lord?

A short poetic reflection on Matthew 1:18-25

Joseph:
What Lord?
I can’t believe it!
She is a good girl,
an honourable girl.
She would never betray me!

What Lord?
I must still marry her!
What Lord?
Your Spirit!
How can that be?

Yes Lord.
“I will”
Yes Lord,
His name
will be Saviour.

Yes Lord,
I will.

Running With Youth’s Naivety – a Poem on Sunday

Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
Acts 2: 17

Oh to run with the naivety of youth,

To jump, dive

and explore

with abandon.

Oh to embrace and experience

Life!

To touch and feel its pleasures and joys.

Oh to try, fail and try again.

Oh to be blind to the cliffs and canyons

of indelible experiences.

Oh to run …

The old head says,

“Wait,

Be careful,

Listen,

Stop!”

The old head remembers the pain

of jumping, running and diving.

The sorrow of embracing.

The old head wishes

that once again,

he could run with the naivety

of youth.

A Poem on Sunday Gen 3:4-5

The world tugs and wrenches at my heart.
Slyly it lures and entices.
Whispers and cajoles.
“You will know the truth.”
“You will not die.”
“You will be like God!”
“Bite, chew, enjoy!”
“Savour the taste.”

The world still tugs, wrenches and lures.
Double minded heart.
Dissembling mind.

The drag and pull relentless,
But life is at hand.
The Calvary comes,
Spirit descends.
Still at war …
… but my side is winning.

The Craftsman

St. Cuthbert, Lindisfarne

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Eph 2:10

Lovingly planned,

Gently formed.

Carved and shaped by sublime hands.

Sanded and smoothed,

Rubbed and polished.

Crafted with pride and purpose.

Breathed into miraculous life.

Accompanied by the maker’s instructions;

To serve,

Be,

Do,

To the glory of the

The Master Craftsman.

Divine Breath: A poem on Sunday

Divine words creating

Shaping

Holy breath speaking into presence

Majestic imagination

Unfolding and weaving

Triunity

In partnership

Speaking, Breathing, Being

Creation blinks

Light streams forth

Air and water part

Land and sea claim their domains

Leaves shoot forth in their hallelujahs!

Stars, planets and comets scatter into space

The rhythm of being beats

The waters swirl with life

The land abounds

Then I am made

Like God!
