A Week Before School Starts

It is a week before school starts,
So the cogs are slowly winding up,
Gearing up for the business/busyness
that is a “school year”.
“Curricula,” check.
“Course Outlines” (nearly) check.
“Resources”, always looking.
“Class lists”, check.
“Ah! ‘X’ is in my class.
That will interesting for him
and me.

The time table,
Yard duty,
The marking,
The discipline,
Those annoying sports days and
assemblies …
and parent meetings.
Diaries and homeroom.
Uniforms and chewing gum.

Is that what the new school year is about?
Or is it …
mentoring and example,
words of encouragement
and correction;
Growth and matuity
for both student and teacher.
Discovering gifts, talents and purpose
and crucially,
a destiny.

In all,
revealing our place
in God’s kingdom
and under His rule.

That Last Step

This journey
as long as it seems,
is only a pilgrimage.
We can try
to set our roots
deep in the ground
and hold fast
and tight.

The tighter we hold
the greater the wrench
when the journey
continues
into the
eternal future
of heaven
or hell.

If we journey
with a new
Christ bought
future life,
as a vision before us,
that last step on earth
will be far more gentle,
more hope filled,
and glorious.

God and Camping

LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth! Psalm 8:1

One of the simple joys in my life is camping. My wife and I throw a tent, sleeping bags and stove (and Grover) in the back of the car and we explore a place we haven’t been to before, or visit a favourite from the past. Very seldom are we disappointed.

At least two things occur on these short trips. One, we are re-enamoured with God’s creation. We are reminded of the beauty, variety and uniqueness of our surroundings. Overseas guests often imagine kangaroos hopping down the main street. The fact is, many of us don’t see them out side of zoos and animal parks or as road kill on the side of a country highway. To wake up in the morning and have kangaroos grazing around the tent is quite special.

The other key event, is our re-connection with God. We take the time to read Scripture and pray in these special surroundings and to reflect on creation as we walk. Again, we are never disappointed. God revitalises and renews our spirits. Every time we come back home we have a renewed appreciation of God and His creation.

With David we can declare, “Oh Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.”

The Graduating Class of 2011

Last night our Year 12 class graduated. It made me think of when I graduated in 1968 – 43 years ago. Even though, in the 1960s,  change was in the wind, large numbers of people still attended church and Christian ethics and values were still the dominant cultural norm. However, life as we knew it was in for a radical shake up. A statistic that I remember was that in 1952 50% of all children attended Sunday School. By 1972 this had fallen to 12%. In 1992 it was 3%. One can only guess at the depths to which it has plummeted to now.

Changes to the Family Law Act in the early 1970s saw divorce rates spiral. This in turn led to greater family dysfunction. The growing popularity of “recreational drugs” has had a huge impact on people. We can add numerous issues to the list such as homosexual lifestyles, the portrayal of sexuality on TV programmes and etc.  Those of us who were around in 1968 have witnessed enormous social change, or more accurately, social disintegration in the last 43 years. Two of the few positive changes have included the reduction of young people dying on our roads and the greater tolerance to ethnic minorities.

But what will life be like when my students turn 61 in 2054, assuming the Lord hasn’t returned? I have indicated in past Posts that I believe 1 Peter is a portrayal of the conditions that will arise. Our children will need a resilient faith. They will need to be a people who, despite the conditions around them, see themselves as a “chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God.” In other words they will need to see their identity in Christ and not in buildings and petty divisions we have created. They will need to know how to live as “strangers” in this world. That, as it was for us, will be the big danger; the false and fatal allure of the world.

Pray for our children as they enter these years and live an example they can follow. Remind them that our God is faithful and “He will not tempt us beyond what we can bear” (1 Cor 10:13). He has also left His Spirit with us and in us as we journey for whatever number of years He gives us.

The Long Drive

Automatically turn the key.
Engine thrums to life.
Slowly edge out
onto the street.
The journey begins
but the real trip
is in my head.
What shall I say or ask?
Will conversation flow?
Will recognition flicker …
or fade?

The drive proceeds
and miles flow past,
but my brain chugs
hesitantly in first.
Thoughts rattle and bump.
Ideas rev and slow.
Fears rotate endlessly.
Will anybody be at home?

Prevenient Grace – some more thoughts

My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me. Psalm 63:8

“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.” John 6:44

Prevenient Grace was not a doctrine I grew up with as it is not popular in Calvinist circles which is, rightfully, cautious about giving man credit for his own salvation. However, the more I reflect on its simple truth, the more I love it. A.W.Tozer decribes it as, “That before a man can seek God, God must first have sought the man.”

Simply. the doctrine of Prevenient Grace reminds me of a number othings:

1. It reminds me of my blind condition: the impact of sin is deadly to my spiritual sight.

2. It reminds me of the amazing grace of God who, through His Spirit pursues me and gives me His Spirit to open my eyes.

3. It also reminds of my need to repent and believe. (e.g. John 3:16).

In the list of doctines, such as Justifying Grace and Sanctifying Grace, remember Prevenient Grace – God pursuing us. As the old hymn declares:

I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew
he moved my soul to seek him, seeking me;
it was not I that found, O Savior true;
no, I was found of thee. Anon C19th

Usually sung to the beautiful tune Finlandia.

Counting the Cost

Luke 14:25-34

“… In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.”

“All to Jesus I surrender” we sing in the old hymn.  Alas, it is not that easy. Even in the midst of this global financial instability the words of Jesus found in the Gospel of Luke ring loudly and uncomfortably. In the West we are a “consumer” culture. It is part of what defines the western lifestyle. We are a “thing” culture and we measure people by their wealth and “things”.

Jesus turns this on its head. A relationship and life in him is all that counts; is all that matters. However, we have grown up “thing oriented”. For us it is a tough  call …  The line “it easier for a camel …” echoes uncomfortably in our heads.

As I write this, my computer, iPad and cameras sit on my desk accusingly. My desk attests to the things in my life and they are just the beginning.

Faith requires not just belief in the person of Jesus but also the desire to follow him and forego all for him. “All to Jesus …”

My prayer, “Jesus, help me to follow you unencumbered.”

PS. Over the next few weeks this is an issue that I want to return to. I don’t know about you, but it bothers me.

The Innkeeper – Correcting the record

I’ve been given a bum wrap.
On the night in question
I’d gone to bed early.
The place was full
‘coz of this census thing.
I’ d been busy all day
fetchin’ this and
and sortin’ that.
And I turned in.
I was bushed.
Now I find I am blamed
for leaving the Messiah
out in the cold.
How was I to know!
It’s not my fault!
The girl at the desk
(a bird brain!)
Never told me.
She told the pregnant lady
and her husband
to use the back shed.
I woulda had more
respect than that.

Years later
people still blame me.
Matthew doesn’t mention me.
Neither does Luke.
But people
once again
jump to
the wrong conclusions,
like they do so often.

Yep.
It coulda been done better.
But still,
how many people can say
the Saviour was born
behind their pub!

How Would You React?

Fishing Boat Returning at Dusk

As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. Mark 1:16-20

My devotional book this morning asked me how I would have responded to Jesus when he made his call to Peter and the others. How would I have answered when he said, “Come, follow me.” I’d love to think that, like Peter, I would have dropped everything and heeded the call. The reality is, I like to mull things over. I don’t like making rash decisions on the spur of the moment, certainly not about important issues such as faith.

Maybe, I thought to myself, these fishermen had heard about Jesus and this was the last hurdle – Jesus’ personal call. Whatever the reality, they heard and responded. Their journey wasn’t a smooth downhill coast from there, yet they persevered. Yes, God had prepared them with His Holy Spirit and the truth is, every Christian since has been blessed because of their obedience to Jesus call. The Word has been spread, the church expanded and faith multiplied through their faithfulness.

This leaves me with two thoughts. For me, I am glad that I grew up in a Christian family and this call came quietly and steadily over many years. My faith grew incrementally. There was no command that required my instant obedience. God, in His grace, worked around my cautious character, nurturing me step by step in the midst of my family. My second thought reflects on the blessing that we have received from the obedience of God’s people in the past, whether the disciples, parents and grandparents, or other faithful Christians. Their investment of time, effort and often their lives, has left us with an amazing heritage. Will future generations be blessed through our heeding of God’s call?

So, Jesus says, “Come, follow me.” O.k. you’ve had time to think about it. What is your answer?

The Christmas Story seen from Refreshed Eyes – Part two

The Divine

For the believer, the divine in Christmas is obvious. The magnificent prophecies of the Old Testament from Genesis 3 onward, all find their fulfilment in the crib at Bethlehem. All God’s purposes are discovered and revealed in Jesus.

But just stop and reflect for a moment. Take the place of a shepherd, wise man or inn keeper. What is it that occurs at this point in history? What do you see? What are you part of in these events? This isn’t arid theology, but rather, it is the true creator God revealing Himself in a way that no other (man made) god had ever imagined bringing hope and salvation to humanity. The birth of the Christ in the person of baby Jesus defies our human imagination.

In this act of grace and hope. We see God’s timing. This man/God was born at a pivotal point in history. A point when the word of hope could spread rapidly and effectively along the trade and military routes of the Roman Empire.

A meticulous God planned for this moment so that His creation would be renewed though His son. Nothing was left to chance. The choice of Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, the wise men, even Herod himself was part of his program of hope, salvation and the restoration of the kingdom.

For me, the most amazing truth is that God chose to intervene. The creator of the universe could just as easily have destroyed us all and started afresh. It is not as though we deserved anything. Salvation isn’t due to us. We are not owed grace. Yet He has extended that to us. For me, that is the divine, the inexplicable … the amazing and true!

If the people around the crib exemplify humanity. God’s planned and purposeful intervention of amazing grace, is the divine.
