Nativity on the Front Porch

The Nativity stable,
a bale of hay
and a crib
sit on the front porch.
They have had their use.
The local schools  have
sung their carols with youthful voices
and re-enacted the
Bible story
with a real live baby!
The church has performed its
obligatory “Carols” service.
And now the Xmas objects
sit,
waiting
to be stored in the garage
for another year.

Hidden beyond
A story,
A medieval carol,
Children playing angels,  Joseph and Mary,
with tea towels and sheets,
and a stable made of scrap wood, is
an eternal miracle,

Of a life lived.
Daily.
Weekly.
Constantly.
Celebrating
the child/man/God
who lives still
through those who believe.

Revealing Christmas
as an enduring living
celebration of King
and His Kingdom.

Still, the stable sits
waiting
for the next innocent “Mary and Joseph”
for next year’s pageant,
and the next …
until the King returns.

The Long Drive

Automatically turn the key.
Engine thrums to life.
Slowly edge out
onto the street.
The journey begins
but the real trip
is in my head.
What shall I say or ask?
Will conversation flow?
Will recognition flicker …
or fade?

The drive proceeds
and miles flow past,
but my brain chugs
hesitantly in first.
Thoughts rattle and bump.
Ideas rev and slow.
Fears rotate endlessly.
Will anybody be at home?

Prevenient Grace

Relentlessly,
chasing and pursuing.
Leaving no stone unturned,
You chased me and
hounded me.
Still, no stone unturned,
no thought un-pricked,
no glory in nature unspoken.
I ran,
but you ran faster,
I twisted and turned,
but you did it quicker.
I hufffed and puffed,
but you
were boundless,
unstinting.
And then,
I thought,
foolishly,
that I had found you.
But you
in hymnal words
“found me!”

A Visit

Lids drooping,
eyes glazed
wandering lazily
unfocussed
around the room.
The words are clear
but not the meaning.
Ideas float between
reality and fantasy
and back again.
Memories
and people from the past
leap into the present.
The present fades.
Joys and sorrows
true and imagined
struggle for presence.
A fist clamped in frustration,
the face contorts
and the eyes narrow
but that memory,
that fact,
that important point
refuses to come.
The eyes wander lazily
again.

But this I know
and hold firm
that the heart and soul
behind those fading eyes
are in His hands!

The Visit

The doors were tall and dark,
The handle ominous.
A suited gent
extended a hand
with a made up smile
that tweeked his lips.
“Bulletin”
Thank you.
Cautiously we wandered in.
Hushed mirmurs.
Which seat?
There is a cushion there,
and a book.
Lets take a chance.
The space dribbled full.
well, fullish.
Pipe organ rumbled the building
Men filed in.
One man ascended.
Songs, and words,
alternated.
A long word.
Songs and words
alternated again.
Then
Hands lifted.
(One set. At the front)
Amen declared.
And people made
for the doors.
Eyes averted,
Shoes inspected.
Ah, fresh air again.
The service is over.
Time for Coffee.
Want one?

Advent – the joy of expectation

Advent
Coming and becoming.
Anticipating
and hoping.
Longing and
Rejoicing.
The ancient Words,
Promises
and pledges
Coming to Life –
Eternal Life.
The salvation plan
winding through
history and people,
kings and peasants,
obedience and rebellion.
Dim distant Covenant shadows
Given breath
and Voice
in starlit Bethlehem.
God made flesh.
Humanity offered life.

The Christmas Poems

Now that the Advent season has begun, I think I have finished my Christmas poems but if any readers have ideas that they would like me to pursue, please pass them on. It has been a lot of fun!

The Innkeeper – Correcting the record

I’ve been given a bum wrap.
On the night in question
I’d gone to bed early.
The place was full
‘coz of this census thing.
I’ d been busy all day
fetchin’ this and
and sortin’ that.
And I turned in.
I was bushed.
Now I find I am blamed
for leaving the Messiah
out in the cold.
How was I to know!
It’s not my fault!
The girl at the desk
(a bird brain!)
Never told me.
She told the pregnant lady
and her husband
to use the back shed.
I woulda had more
respect than that.

Years later
people still blame me.
Matthew doesn’t mention me.
Neither does Luke.
But people
once again
jump to
the wrong conclusions,
like they do so often.

Yep.
It coulda been done better.
But still,
how many people can say
the Saviour was born
behind their pub!

The Magi – another Christmas Poem

They laughed behind their hands
when we set off.
Our camels loaded.
What will it be?
A king?
A child?
A what?
We headed westward
with anticipation
and gifts.
The omen was clear
shining in the sky –
our compass and guide.

All of our studies seemed
true.
But
what if we found
no child
no king?
Could we return?
Our reputations a joke!

But “something”
was felt by us all
as we travelled
the long miles west.

We found a king
in Jerusalem.
Too old,
Too mean,
Too unwise.
We vowed not
to return this way.
We stargazed on
and came
to a man, woman and child.
No pretensions.
Humble
Joyfilled
poor
but ALIVE!

Then we knew!
We were sure!
The child, king , messiah
was found.
We could return home
with stories
with hope
… and our reputations.

The Blank Slate

I’m new.
A blank slate
waiting for a life to be written over me.
I’m new, fresh
longing to know love
and family,
hope, home and future.
Mum, dad,
what will you write?
Will it be with intention
with hope and vision?
Will it be in the warm love
of family?
Will you tell me
where the limits are,
the boundaries,
beyond which I may be hurt
and mis-shaped?
Will you show me
how to be wise;
how to make decisions well,
and how to live life
to the full?

I don’t know
what to expect;
what to be wary of.
Will you tell me,
hold my hand and
warn me,
and love me with a firm love?

Or will you let me walk and wander
on my own,
with no paths,
directions
or guide?

Mum, dad,
what will you do?
